The holidays are meant to be filled with joy, warmth, and family. But for Sarah and her family, the season nearly turned into heartbreak when their dog, Ruger, snapped his leash and ran into a wooded park. What followed was a challenging search filled with obstacles, determination, and ultimately a Christmas miracle.
The Plan: Overcoming Early Roadblocks
The search began with a call from Sarah, who explained that Ruger had bolted into a nearby park. While there were a few sightings, Ruger’s speed and nervousness made him difficult to approach.
Our first challenge came quickly: the park was located in Class D airspace near an airport. Unlike most searches, we couldn’t instantly launch our drone. A special FAA request had to be submitted, and waiting nearly 24 hours for approval was agonizing.
While we waited, we put together a plan. Using reported sightings, we mapped out Ruger’s likely paths and hiding spots. With the weather turning colder and fewer people in the park, we knew time was running short.
The Search: Pushing Through Challenges
Our flight authorization was finally approved. But the challenges weren’t over. Our large viewing screen cracked during travel, and additional drone unlock requirements delayed us further. Still, we pressed on.
Once airborne, the drone scanned the park with thermal imaging. Wildlife filled the screen, squirrels, birds, and even a deer, but Ruger remained elusive.
Then came the breakthrough: a jogger reported seeing a loose dog during her run. She pointed us to a location, and with renewed determination, we directed the drone that way. Hope was building. We were closing in.
The Recovery: A Family Reunited
Sarah and her son set out toward the area the jogger had indicated. Ruger, tangled in brush, barked as they approached. In survival mode, he didn’t recognize them at first.
Sarah moved slowly, letting him catch her scent. The moment Ruger realized it was her, everything changed. His tail wagged, his excitement showed, and with gentle encouragement and some food, Sarah freed him.
The relief was overwhelming. With Christmas just a week away, their family was whole again, able to celebrate the season without fear or worry.
Why We Do This Work
