The Plan: Understanding the Situation
Justin, the dogs’ owner, had let Sage and Jotunn outside for a routine break. But when he checked on them later, they were gone. His property was fully enclosed by fencing, making their disappearance even more baffling.
After hours of searching on his own and hearing a neighbor report that they had seen the dogs in the area, Justin knew he needed help. That’s when he called Drone Pet Recovery.
With rugged terrain and limited cell service ahead, the search wouldn’t be easy. But our thermal drone gave us an advantage: the ability to scan wide areas quickly and pick up the dogs’ heat signatures. The plan was to begin at the last known location and work outward.
The Search: Spotting Heat Signatures
We launched the drone as soon as we arrived, but at first, we flew in the wrong direction without guidance from Justin. Once he arrived and redirected us, everything changed. Within just five minutes, two distinct heat signatures appeared deep in the woods near a creek. It was Sage and Jotunn.
Locating them was the easy part, bringing them home would prove much harder.
The Recovery: A Chase Through the Wilderness
As Justin approached, the dogs saw movement and bolted. They followed the creek, weaving through brush and rugged terrain, always staying just out of reach.
With help from neighbors and an ATV, we tracked their path. Each time we got close, they slipped away again. Finally, we adjusted our strategy. Instead of chasing them, Justin moved ahead to where they were heading and positioned himself near a steep ravine by the creek.
The Reunion
At first, the dogs didn’t recognize him. They cautiously walked past, still in survival mode. But then, Jotunn caught his scent. He moved toward Justin, tail wagging, and nuzzled in for affection. Sage followed his lead.
After 48 hours lost in the wild, both dogs were finally home, tired, hungry, but safe.
Lessons Learned
This rescue highlighted both the power of thermal drones and the importance of patience in recovery. Finding lost pets is only the first step; bringing them back requires strategy, persistence, and an understanding of animal behavior.
Sage and Jotunn’s journey is proof that even in the toughest conditions, hope is never lost.
