Lost Australian Shepherd Found with Thermal Drone After Cold Night
Kimba, a young Aussie, spent a freezing night lost in the woods. See how a thermal drone search led to her safe recovery and reunion.
She was alone in the cold, curled up by a creek, hungry, scared, and lost in unfamiliar woods. Kimba, a young Australian Shepherd, vanished during a family walk through the maple woods. What followed was a search through rain, wind, technical difficulties and finally, an unforgettable reunion.

The Plan
On a cold February night, we arrived on location. Kimba had been missing since the evening before. Her family had been checking maple sap lines when she bolted; young, nervous, and unfamiliar with the area.
The conditions were rough: dense woods, cold rain, high winds, and technical issues with our drone camera. Still, we launched the drone and searched as long as we could. That first night turned up nothing. We paused the search, knowing better weather and fresh information might give us another chance.
The Search
The next morning brought hope. An Amish neighbor reported seeing a dog matching Kimba’s description nearby. We headed straight to the new location around noon, perfect timing, with overcast skies creating ideal conditions for thermal imaging.
Within ten minutes, we had her.
The thermal drone picked up Kimba’s heat signature. She was curled into a tight ball by the edge of a creek, trying to stay warm in the freezing conditions.
The Recovery
Before sending Jared and Bryson in to approach her, we reminded them of an important lesson: when recovering a lost pet, never rush or call loudly. That can scare them into bolting again. Instead, approach quietly, calmly, and with food in hand.
With the drone monitoring from above, Jared and Bryson followed the plan. Kimba lifted her head, cautious but not fleeing. Hungry and tired, she began to wag her tail… and walked right up to them.
In that moment, relief replaced fear. Kimba was safe. She devoured the food they offered, then happily returned home with her family, tired but unharmed.
A Lesson in Hope
Kimba’s story is proof that recovery takes more than just technology. It takes patience, teamwork, and heart. Thermal drones are powerful tools, but it’s strategy and calm handling that turn sightings into reunions.
